To the monkey

Considering how often we’ve seen the word in the past few days, does anyone else keep getting that reflex mental association that “Assange” in French means “to the monkey”? No? Just me then? Right.

In fact “Julian” means “youthful”, so from now on we should all read “The United States government wants to kill Youthful To The Monkey.” That’s far more entertaining.

Anyway, I signed an open letter to our fair Prime Minister a couple of days ago, totally outclassed among an intimidatingly impressive bunch of intellectual heavy-hitters, asking that she stick up for To The Monkey. Basically a bunch of American politicians and media types have been on the record saying he should be assassinated as a threat to national security. I don’t give a shit about his website or the pros and cons of what he’s done: simple fact is the man’s an Australian citizen, and yet we haven’t heard a peep out of our spineless pragmatist of a Prime Minister in protest. Apparently extrajudicial killing is just fine by her. David Hicks, eat your heart out.

The letter was published on the ABC’s website yesterday, and is closing on 5000 comments now, mostly more signatories in support. In fact there have been so many comments it has partially crashed the site. You can read it here, though you may not be able to access the comments due to the crashing.
